PRP treatment has gained immense popularity in recent years. Orthopedic doctors and sports medicine doctors use it to boost the healing of injured parts of the musculoskeletal system, while dermatologists use it for facial rejuvenation and hair loss treatment.

But have you ever wondered about the efficacy of this advanced treatment? Various studies have studied the efficacy of PRP therapy in the treatment of orthopedic conditions. Some reported positive results, while others reported mixed results.

Let’s explore what studies say about the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma therapy, what conditions can benefit from this treatment, and where you can go for this treatment in Little Rock, Arkansas.

What Studies Say About PRP Treatments?

Several studies have reported excellent results of PRP therapy. For instance, a research study observed the effects of PRP on 230 patients with painful tennis elbows. During the study duration, patients were treated with either a PRP injection or conservative treatments. The results were assessed after 24 weeks of the treatment. According to results, nearly 84 percent of patients in the group that received PRP injections reported a 25 percent or more pain reduction.

Another study that was aimed to determine the efficacy of PRP treatment studied the effect of PRP treatments on 99 tendons with chronic tendinopathies (including tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, high hamstring tendinosis, Achilles tendinosis, and plantar fasciitis). The study included participants who had experienced painful tendon symptoms for an average of 3 years.

The study reported that most patients reported pain relief following PRP therapy, while half of the patients who received PRP injections with a lower content of leukocytes reported total relief.

Various early studies have also indicated that PRP treatments can modulate joint movement and reduce joint swelling, thereby helping treat pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.

Although ample research has reported promising results of PRP treatments, more work needs to be done. PRP treatments work best when offered as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan consisting of rest, physical therapy, medications, and cold or heat therapy.

What Conditions PRP Can Treat

PRP treatments are low-risk and can be used for the treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal system injuries and conditions, including.

  • Tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis of larger joints like the shoulder, hip, and knee
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Tendon and ligament tear
  • Meniscal tear
  • Sprains and strains
  • Acute and chronic cartilage injuries

PRP therapy utilizes the body’s own natural healing mechanism to help injured tissues heal faster and better. If you have a certain musculoskeletal system condition, it’s best to see an orthopedic doctor to determine if PRP treatments are right for your unique injury or condition.
