Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Therapy
If you’re looking for a non-surgical alternative to treat your pain, Dr. William Hefley offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy to treat patients of all ages and activity levels. Also known as regenerative medicine, these revolutionary orthopedic procedures use components from your own body to relieve pain and promote the regeneration of new, healthy tissue.
The body heals naturally through inflammation. When an injury occurs, platelets are the first to respond, setting off a healing cascade. Sometimes, however, the healing process needs a boost. By injecting stem cells or platelet-rich plasma into the affected area, these therapies can potentially jump-start the body’s natural healing process in many chronic conditions and injuries. Stem cell therapy and PRP therapy can be used simultaneously for even better results.
Dr. Hefley uses these regenerative medicine techniques to help heal a number of shoulder, hip, and knee conditions. Learn more below.
- Tendonitis

Stem Cell Therapy: Stem cell therapy is typically used for more severe orthopedic problems. It promotes the repair of diseased or damaged tissue using mesenchymal stem cells (a type of adult stem cell). Injected directly into the site of injury, stem cells relieve pain, provide faster healing, and generate new, healthy tissue.
PRP Therapy: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from your body’s own blood cells, which contain platelets. After we collect a blood sample from you, we spin it in a centrifuge for 20 minutes to separate the platelets, growth factors, and white blood cells.
Dr. Hefley will then numb the areas to be treated with an anesthetic injection. Using ultrasound guidance, he will inject the platelets and growth factors into the damaged tissue. The high concentration of platelets indicates that there is injured tissue to be healed and attracts stem cells to the area, which accelerates the repair process.
