What to Look for in an Orthopedic Surgeon

Whether it’s the knee replacement that you’ve been putting off for years or a recent injury, there are a number of things to look for when vetting local orthopedic surgeons. Your body is telling you it’s time for your procedure, but you’ve never even seen an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion, imaging, and an extensive consultation. Where should you begin?

Good referrals

Talk to your primary care physician or other specialists that you might see – maybe a physical therapist or a massage therapist if you regularly visit them, for opinions and referrals. They see a lot of clients just like you and have heard all the references and maybe even some horror stories. Talk to them about your pain and what your goals are and hopefully, they can help put you in contact with someone qualified and respected.

Patient satisfaction surveys

After you’ve consulted with your insurance company and have decided which orthopedic surgeons in your area are covered, now it’s time to take a deep dive into patient satisfaction surveys to narrow down your options. Good doctors get good reviews, and a medical procedure that helped improve someone’s quality of life is something worth sharing. Also, ask friends that you know have had an orthopedic procedure done for a firsthand account.

Research their credentials

You want to make sure your potential orthopedic surgeon is board certified, with extensive experience. Luckily, everything is only a click away these days and you can check the online databases of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons for the credentials of a potential specialist.

Specialties

Consider their specialties and years of training in mind. If your nearest orthopedic surgeon specializes in full-knee replacements but your issue is with your shoulder, that might not be the orthopedic surgeon for you. It really depends on what you value most and what will make you feel most comfortable with your doctor. Is there a special procedure or surgical approach you have researched and want for your hip replacement? Consider all your options and vet your orthopedic prospects carefully based on what your priorities and health goals are.

If you are looking for the right orthopedic surgeon for your needs, consult with board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bill Hefley about your treatment options.
